The Fez as a Code: The Transformation of Symbols in the Traditional Crimean Tatar Headdress
"Fez as a Code: Transformation of Symbols in the Traditional Crimean Tatar Headwear" is the result of a study into the symbols, shapes, and decorative elements of the traditional Crimean Tatar fez, as well as its changes under the influence of historical, social, and political processes, aimed at creating an art object.
The project was implemented with the support of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation and the Ministry of Culture of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
The Crimean Tatar fez is a traditional women's headwear item that serves as an important cultural code and a carrier of ancestral memory. It is adorned with embroidery, coins, and specific ornaments whose symbolism reflects a woman's identity and status.
Throughout history, the appearance of the fez transformed under the influence of social and political processes, making it a key object for artistic reinterpretation and the decolonization of heritage.
